Managing complexity, risk, costs as well as skills and resources is at the heart of implement-ing mission critical support for SAP-centric solutions. The complexity rises even further with the trend of outtasking and outsourcing of process components. To help customers manage their SAP-centric solutions, SAP provides a comprehensive set of standards for solution op-erations.
Out of this set of standards, the upgrade standard focuses on providing guidance for a holis-tic and effective quality management of an upgrade project from its earliest stages of evalua-tion until after a successful cut over of the productive system: end-to-end. The standard de-fines the key focus areas of upgrades, provides guidance for the management of upgrade projects, and explains best practices for upgrade realization. All this helps customers to better understand and manage the major technical risks and challenges within an upgrade project and to make the upgrade project “a no-event for the business”.
This document provides details regarding the upgrade standard. It explains the basic concept of the standards, describes the seven key focus areas of upgrade projects, and lists and ex-plains the activities of the different phases of a “standard” SAP upgrade project.
